The Five Phases of a Job Opening

The Department of Labor reports that there are currently five times more unemployed in the US than there are published job vacancies and human resources executives say that there is an average of 203 applicants for many professional and managerial positions.

Many opportunities are never advertised and are filled by candidates successfully positioning themselves in advance of an employer deciding to go public with a vacancy (see The Five Stages of a Job Opening, below).

The earlier that a job seeker can position him- or herself the better, hence the importance of tracking and researching those employers most likely to have opportunities for one’s skill sets. As the opportunity forms, a job seeker needs to be well positioned.
